The demise of the Ragtop Caddy

So as usual, money was needed for real life stuff at home, for those of you that watched Rosanne back in the day, thats my life.

The Caddy goes up for sale, mostly dumb offers and silly trade's, then the day i drop the price to $4500 i imediatly get an urgent email asking me to call a number. So i do, its an older lady, flat out tells me she "needs" the caddy, doesnt want to negotiate and will pay me the following morning. I tell her to slow down, and that she and her husband need to see it first.  we agree to meet the following morn. I show up and the wife is in shopping and the husband walks over to see it. Mid 60's maybe, and clearly out of his depth, never owned a classic, knows zero about cars and isnt listenimg to a single thing i say as i ramble on about the oddities of a 43 year old Caddy. He says he is going to the bank and wants me to drop it off that afternoon. All my alarm bells are going off badly at this point. I tell him i will get back to him as i have another lad that wants to see it rigjt after this meeting. He says "oh, ok" and wanders off seemingly angry. I go meet the second guy and he shows up in an 06 ish Denali with an 800hp 572 BBC in it, canfield heads, dominator etc, clearly a huge gearhead with money. He wants the car, no negotiating but will pay me Sunday afernoon. I agree as he knows the caddy is a bit of a pail and still digs it. I go home and call the older couple to walk away from the deal. The lady gets sooooo upset to the point of tears, its her husbands dream, he wants THIS car. I tell her it could cost a million bucks toget it "legit" saftied, and its loud and on and on about why this ist the car for them, and she wont stop, offers me more money etc etc, so the hell with it. You want, you got it. I call the second lad and blow the deal up. I clean my crap out of the caddy and head over to drop it off. I spend as much time as possible asking them again and again if they are sure. So....i start listing things they need to know, right down to how to start the thing, what oil to use, how the shifter says nuetral when in drive, and on and on. They completly ignore me, they talk to their dog, ask me how to insure it,  ask me if Canadian Tire does safety inspections etc until ihave heard enough and take my plates and leave.

So the car now sits at a local GM dealer, seems it was towed in for a no start, they replace the starter and even then it does not want to roll over, when it finally does its running on much less then 8 and puking oil and coolant everywhere and instantly overheats. He broke the motor, seems he was driving around in "D" which is sometimes secomd and alot of the time first. How that happens with 18" glasspacks screaming out the back  i will never know. So if i had to guess its likley off to the scrap yard now given the cost of having someone rebuild a 500ci caddy and installing it. I feel guilty, and kinda pissed off at the same time.....now im waiting tohear from my buddy that works at the dealer to see where things are at currently.

Ouch. That sucks :(.
Still, you DID try to tell them what they needed to know...

I feel your pain though, I'd probably feel the same way.

I really did, huge....and they were off in lala land unfortunalty. I didn't take the offer for extra money, I had another buyer, I thought I did everything I could to dissuade them.... I guess in the end I should have just said no, and let them be upset. Wouldn't have changed a damn thing for me as it was sold to the Denali guy anyways (which BTW was exceptionally cool given it looked stock...and sounded like a pro stock car) so yeah....guess it is what it is....now I'm assuming its ignorant to offer them 1k as it sits right? But if its getting scrapped, I will absolutely try and buy it through someone so they don't know its me and I don't wind up looking like a complete Dbag....i just hate to see it get sold for metal....

Total disclosure is always the best policy. Sounds like you did right by them, if they didn't listen that's not your problem. He should have taken it to a mechanic and spent the extra cheddar he was offering before plating the damn thing.

Well now its even weirder, I heard from 2 reliable sources which dealer it was at, so I gave the service manager a call today (used to work there, know him well) and he says nope, its never been there....hmmmm....
Might shoot the couple an email and ask how its running....just domt wanna "poke the bear" if it is indeed blown up....

whenever i sell or trade i usually talk about all the great cool features to get them in the door and looking at it. Once they decide its cool, amd likeit, i will go through whatever issues im aware of. This allows me to actually show the good amd the ugly. If i tell everyone in an add or on tje phone all the faults rigjt off the bat nobody would give it a second glance. I have been through 14 "toys" since 2010 and nobody has tried to punch me in the nose yet lol.

That's too bad but it's their own fault. Some people just won't listen no matter what.

Not a one, it WAS at the dealer, I guess different shifts means not everyone saw it is all. I don't have their email addy so I don't know what ever happened. I keep watching for it to pop up on kijiji but nothing yet.
