My truck was too rotten for life, so I scrapped it (or will soon) and got this instead.
It's an 87 GTI with the twin cam engine, although this one has been through the ringer. The dude who was building it has had it since 07, and it has not been on the road since then. My very first VW ever was an 87 GTI 16v, like this one, and I've been looking for one for a while. It came with a ton of parts, so it's already paid for itself with the sale of all the extras/wheels/etc. The important part is that I sold all my remaining dual carb stuff to this guy years ago...and now I have them all back :). There's a set of Dellorto DHLA40 carbs in my garage now, waiting to go on this car. My jet box alone was worth a couple hundred, Dellorto jets don't grow on trees ;).
It's gonna have a LOT redone (floors, etc), then it's getting spraycanned with some fine tremclad, and I'm going to drive the hell out of it while re-living the early 90s in my head, lol.
Now see, that just cool, I don't even know if I would paint it lol. Are those 928 wheels?
Either way, anything with multiple carbs is just good sense. Although I find some irony in that I have heard your a tuning whiz with pcm's that nobody wants to touch.
Love it and keep this updated
I think so, but they're already sold, lol. Selling the whole setup (wheels, tires, adapters) basically got me the money back for the car itself :).
If there's a way to alter the tune on something, I have to know how, haha. PCMs, standalone EFI, carbs, it's an addiction. I didn't grow up in a car family, and only started playing with cars at 22, so I skipped carbs and went right into 80's euro tin with EFI. I got into them a few years back after converting a Rabbit I had to dual carbs, and I was immediately hooked on how basic it all was...but ran so well :). To work with a carbed anything, you've really got to know how it all works together (distributor, vac lines, igntion timing, etc), which was completely different than EFI where you only have to be concerned with what the laptop shows. I had to re-learn pretty much everything, which opened my eyes a lot.
It DOES suck to have to buy 4 of every jet/emulsion tube/choke/etc, but dammit...I loves me some carbs :). I'll eventually swap to EFI, just to keep busy, but carbs will always be my fav.
Right on Chad, it's nice to have a project that basically paid for itself. You should sell the rest of that tiny little engine and drop a Supercharged V6 in it :)
Trust me Gary, if it were FWD, I would ;).
I'm already considering other engine options for the future. I have a soft spot for the GM Ecotec 2.2/2.4, since they make all sorts of stuff for it...and it would inspire massive hatred from the VW purists, lol.
I did 10 minutes work to it today, in prep for engine removal. In those 10 minutes I discovered that every single threaded hole that exists in the body, to mount the rad support/headlights/etc, has been ruined by someone in the past. They all had bolts with the wrong thread pitch in them, and a nut to hold them tight on the blind side. Of course they were all different sizes too, grr.
I'm beginning to regret buying someone else's project...

Yeah, I know, I definitely got a deal on it (already made back my money, lol), just being anal retentive I guess.
Even made an extra $50 off it last night, selling parts I don't need. It's rare to make money on a project vehicle and still own it, haha.
Bay is stripped...engine/headlight harness is out...interior is empty...front suspension is gone... ...and I've re-learned why these cars infuriate me. Sigh. Pressure-washing is next up, then a bit of engine bay work.

Pretty much! It's up on a half-dolly I welded to the front bumper metal, since the front susp is gone, and I have replacement bumpers for it. I can push it around and even lift it up and over the 4" ledge into my garage :).
Yeah, I miss those days. Now the whole 'scene' is just so negative and 'limited', which is why I like it here better :).
Here's what it looks like currently. The finest Tremclad home depot had to offer:
Just finished reassembling my steering rack too, although that's not pic worthy. Hopefully I didn't uFck it up too badly, lol. I also splurged on a replacement front airdam/lip, since it was missing, and they don't grow on junkyard trees like they used to :(.

Spent 5 hours today, and all I managed to get done is half a pan removal. The PO was so far out of his element when he did the job, it was a nightmare to undo. The home-made front seat mount point came out BY HAND. It was welded in. No idea how you don't get good penetration on sheet metal. There's also supposed to be two reinforcement channels, but the PO didn't bother reinstalling the second one. This leaves a weak point near the rocker/jack pad. If anyone tried to use it to jack the car up, it would have crushed right into the body since it's not supported anymore. I figured out a way to get the leftover tar from the aftermarket sound deadening off...fire :). MAPP gas torch to the rescue! Without that, it would have taken a lot longer, since the tar kept gumming up the sawzall and grinder.

Definitely not trying to make anyone feel inferior, lol. It's more of a cautionary tale. Don't do what I do ;).
Started torching the tar off the driver's rear floorpan tonight. It might actually be pretty easy to remove, since the PO didn't do as 'good' of a job on it. 'Good' being a relative term I guess.
Maybe late summer, although that might be a pipe dream. I'm hoping to get the floors done before it gets too cold (no insulation or ceiling in the garage), and if that happens, I'll take the winter to freshen up the engine. It's not too hard to keep a small spot warm to do that.
Slow and steady wins the race...and drives the racer crazy. I swear, I've never forced myself to move as slowly as I am with this car. It's paying off though, everything is coming up perfect :).
Thanks Gary.
I am cursed with impatience, and an obsessive need to work on something non-stop until it's done...so I tend to rush the jobs I do. This is as close as I get to 'slow', haha.
I quick-tacked the seat cross-mount up front, and did a quick test of the seat fitment this morning (see 'obsessive'). It fits perfectly, which makes me happy :).
Driver's floor is done and 'painted'. Tonight I'm heading to Home Depot for some insulation so I can FINALLY work through the winter. I'll probably ufck this up, but I've got to try.
Renovations aren't my thing, but I can hopefully handle putting up insulation and vapour barrier...
Welded a trailer jack to a scrap bumper rebar, now I can move it around with the suspension off. The rebar is pretty flexy, but it allows me to move the car around and then put it on stands pretty easily.
The ceiling is 80% insulated! I'm currently crippled due to a back injury, so I begged a buddy's help, and we got through most of the ceiling before we ran out of vapour barrier (my miscalculation). It's going to be VERY nice to be able to work in the garage over the winter :).
Got my crippled butt up a ladder a few times today, so now the strapping is up on 1/3 of the ceiling. It felt really good to stretch.
I think I'll be able to tackle the rest of the install myself, I'll see how it goes. There's a tricky spot near the door that is going to be a pain to insulate, thanks to the fact that the garage was built after the house, and not done very well.
I can't wait to be warm! It's going to be sweeeeeeet!
I ufcking hate doing renovations. I have no patience for it, and no desire to learn to do it properly. I applaud and respect people out there who can do it well, because HOLY CRAP DOES IT SUCK!
This Saturday will be the day it's finally finished, and I can start to re-organize. I haven't touched my car in weeks, I'm seriously going through withdrawl.
I've still got mud on my living room walls and ceilings, been there 2 yrs. The last thing she wants to do when she gets home is reno's and I won't do any cause automatically I'd be doing it wrong.
FFS...I hate my luck sometimes. I picked up (IE: got for free because it was in need of repair) a kick-ass 6-speed transmission for my car, that would allow me to never worry about breaking one ever again, but it's effing heavy. Picking it up to put it in the back of my Subaru, it started to slip, so I moved my right arm/hand slightly to compensate. Next, I heard a 'snap', and felt a pop in my elbow. The transmission just about hit the ground and my arm went limp, while my brain said "HOLYMU****INSONOFABITCHTHAT****INGHURT!!!!!!!!!!". So now I'm down to one arm for a week or so, because there's some loose bearings rattling around in my right elbow.
Thanks Gary, lucky for me I managed to get the snowblower fixed up before this happened. I can still perform my manly duties, haha.
Does anyone else know how hard it is to use a computer with only one arm?
Trying to use the mouse with my left hand has shown me my left side is borderline paralyzed, it barely listens to my brain! I try to move it to the left, and it goes on a 45* angle up the screen. My coworkers think it's hilarious.
