Getting an ownership/papers.

So, I'm going on friday to check out a 68 Cortina, but there's a possibility that paperwork will be non-existent.  Has ANYONE ever gotten an ownership via other legal means, such as a notarized affidavit, etc?  I am not sure 'purchasing a historic document' at Barrie will work due to the relative new-ness and rarity of the car I'm checking out.  I have sworn to myself that I'd never buy a car without papers again...but it's a friggin Cortina, which is smack dab in the middle of my love of German/British Fords.  I can't pass it up if it's solid.

(not the car I'm going to see, but this is what I'd like it to look like).
